Why do others feel obliged to make others dance here in India? Is it because they want them to open up? To loosen up? Is it because its a way to ensure the other person has their guard down? Or to exert their power? Is it because we are more collective than other cultures? Why is their that itch?
Out of all the talents this one seems to be the most in demand. I have never been compelled to say a joke or play an instrument or showcase any other talent apart from dancing. Maybe the occasional singing compulsion.
Is it to check conformity? To gauge if the other person can be trusted? Or for team building? To create a team that can coordinate? To bond? A custom, a cultural phenomena that is quite prevalent here in India.
I like to play football, run, game, swim, write, read etc etc I don't feel any need to mandate other people to do this. I don't catch them, drag them to do these things and view them negatively (even if mockingly if they don't do it).
Possible explanations ( via Claude ) -
- View collective dancing as a way to build trust and social cohesion
- Dancing is uniquely communal and primal - it's one of humanity's oldest social bonding activities
- There's often an assumption that not dancing equals not having fun.
- Some cultures view dance participation as a sign of respect or celebration
- Group dancing can be seen as a test of whether someone is a "team player"
Regardless, the itch to make others dance comes with "unique social pressures that override normal respect for personal boundaries".
As per Claude - People should feel free to participate in social activities in ways that feel authentic and comfortable to them. The key might be recognizing that while dance can be a powerful tool for social bonding, forcing participation can actually create resistance and resentment, defeating its original purpose of bringing people together.
I agree.
In the ongoing tension between the Individual and the Group, the individual interest should triumph in this instance and the purpose of bringing people together to celebrate must not be forgotten. There are other ways to build trust, bond, have fun, celebrate than compelling others to dance.
