Why don’t more Indian’s wear Sunglasses?

What is the usage of sunglasses in India? Its sunny and hot but why don’t enough people wear it? I’m walking in a corporate tech park and its bright and sunny. Not one person is wearing it. Its not rural India. Even in cities like Bangalore and Delhi where people have higher disposable incomes we don’t see high usage. Is it because of sunglasses being perceived as a fashion statement and not used for its functionality and utility of making it easier to see?

Titan had sunglasses sales of 70 crore in FY 2021-22. There were imports of $28 million under HS Code 900490. Based on this data and querying Claude, the rough market size is $100 - 200 million. This is relatively small.

Its not like its not advertised. All eye shops have ads of sunglasses. Local traders at roadsides also keep them.

I suspect the answer lies in lower disposable incomes and cultural aspects (sunglasses may be perceived as someone who’s rich and a show off? High headed and not modest?)

Is it awkward and do people feel shy?

Do you own a pair of sunglasses? How often do you use it daily, weekly, monthly? If you don’t use it as often why not? Inconvenient to carry?
