The value switch in the idea of FIRE

In case you did not know, this is what FIRE is. And here's a bit more.

Here's what I think people miss -

  • To not have work, to sit on the beach is temporary and will soon switch from relaxing to boring.
  • It leads to frugality and devaluing of the present with a focus on the future. What is the point of money if not to lead a better life? Then why suffer by spending less to save excessively more. What if you die tomorrow or what if the world is worse off?
  • If everyone tries to FIRE we can't have an economy and no one is actually free. We're all worse off. The expected return % calculated comes from an economy of workers.
  • To retire is to decay and deplete oneself into the void, ready to be forgotten.

Instead I would shift focus on finding work that engages you that you can do till 90 that pays you decently. So one should never retire but work on what they find engaging or strive towards that. An alternative is to create the conditions which lead to engagement or perhaps having a different mindset about your work. Dismiss the idea of FIRE and try to find meaningful, rewarding, engaging work.

If one has tried everything towards making building an engaging and fulfilling career or job and has failed. When you hate your job so much and you can't switch to anything else (you have better chances than you think) perhaps that's when you should consider FIRE. Once the idea of FIRE becomes central it makes you look at the other side and slowly dislike your present, devalue work and become a slave to money.
