I don’t watch a lot of comedy but I do come across it sometimes. We had the old school comedy on TV during the first wave. With YouTube we saw another new wave of comedy and now there's a third wave that tries to be edgy, abusive, "roast" others and cross lines. But while they may appear crossing lines through abusing and saying mean things, there are some lines even the most vulgar ones don’t cross (which was recently violated).
- They rarely go after Parents/Family
- They rarely go after Religion
- They rarely go after the Politics and Politicians
- They rarely go after the Country
The lines that do get crossed are what may be deemed inappropriate behavior. A little naughty and mean. These sacred lines are not crossed and if crossed they are attacked for crossing them. There are some that do cross them but they are not popular. Is it because there's no content? I doubt it. They know they are not free enough to speak and they'll get in trouble.
There is a mockery of the individual mostly. Of the self. Along with abusive language. Does it come from being insecure of who they are and the pressure of what society excepts? Or is it for attention? Our confidence in who we are, our dignity, self-worth and respect for ourselves is thrown out in the name of laughter. I never understood why people get roasted or why they roast others.
The comedian does it for the audience and for the character he is. What is said is not reflection of the comedian but of the audience. What is said is what the audience will like and the audience for the most part will not like crossing those sacred lines. And why does the audience like it?
If there's anything to enjoy from Comedy, its the audience, the crowd and the masses. Its not the Comedian but the audience that deserves more attention.
Regardless, I don't think any of it should be banned, censored or canceled. It should be filtered to ensure those below 18 don't see it but other than I don't see it fit to restrict.
